Mammoth Area

Mammoth Loops

There are four loops in the Mammoth area, two on the east side of Highway 395 and two on the west side. There are also short connector trails between each pair of adjacent loops so that you can ride half of one loop, cut across to the adjacent loop, rode all of it, cut back across to the first loop, then ride the rest of it back to the starting point. You can also ride half of one loop, cut across the adjacent loop, ride half of it, cut across the next adjacent loop, ride half of it, cut across the last adjacent loop, ride half of it back to the start. The Roll Chart for each loop indicates where the cut across trail leaves or joins so you can easily cut and tape Roll Chart pieces to also make a two, three, or four loop ride.

The two loops on the east side of 395 are partially marked by the forest service but because they did not utilize the best routes, the Roll Charts will occasionally deviate from the marked route then return to it using the most fun route available.

Mammoth to Bodie Loop

This ride goes from Mammoth to Bodie then to Lee Vining for lunch and gas then back to Mammoth. It's very difficult with miles of soft sand around Mono Lake followed by a very rocky jeep road up to Bodie. Although it opens up in late May or June, it is another great fall ride because of all the colors you will encounter and the lower temperatures in the sand sections. The ride starts from the intersection of Main and Saw Mill across from McDonald's in Mammoth. You can park and unload in a parking lot by the sewer dump just inside Shady Rest camp ground.
