The
Sneakers Motorcycle Club was formed in 1981 as a trail riding group in
the Inyo and Mono County areas of California. Due to constant land
closures by the Bureau of Land Management and the United States Forest Service,
who wanted to categorize the trail rides as events, the Sneakers evolved
into a Political Action organization. Monthly rides were hosted by
individual members instead of the Sneakers.
The
Sneakers Club provides hot dogs and drinks at each ride; Newsletters;
T-shirts, Jerseys, etc. for sale; and organized opposition to continual
land closures. All money is used to fight unwarranted closures.
Members
who host a ride each month determine the location and suitability of the
area for a trail ride. Each member is expected to ride with a buddy and
they are responsible to each other. The trail is marked by each member
waiting at every corner until the approaching rider waves the waiting
rider on. Anyone wanting to join or participate in a member trail ride
must be sponsored by an existing member.
This
system has made it possible for off-roaders in the area to interact and
meet each other which has led to successful organized opposition to
excessive environmentalist demands. |
